The "Coaching" Approach

I see potential in every student I meet. I genuinely believe that everyone has the ability to be a good golfer with the right plan and a caring Coach. Therefore, I strive to be a well-rounded “coach” not just a swing fixer. To help someone improve as a golfer I need to identify the skills they are weakest in and help them fundamentally improve and gain confidence. I use a variety of assessment tools inlcuding TPI fitness screens, mental profiles, video alanysis, round tracking just to name a few.  The art of what I do is less about diagnosing swing faults (even though I am good at that!) and more about prioritizing faults and creating a plan for improvement appropriate for that person. Every student's plan is personalized based on their timeline, level of comittment and specific requests.

Swing Philosophy

I hope you can agree that you must learn to walk before you can run. Imagine how hard it would be to run if you weren't confident walking? So why is it that golf teachers and students alike are so anxious to perform a full swing without mastering the basics first? It happens all the time. I'm here to help you build a full swing, but with baby steps. This would be an example of how I would teach a beginner- however, I do use these concepts to help experienced players improve their fundamentals as well.

Step 1

Learn and understand the foundation of our pie: "PGA"  (Posture, Grip, Alignment) Get comfortable in the basic "Y" set-up position.

Step 2

Swing your "Y" back and through.  This drill isolates the moment of impact (the most critical component of a good hit) so you can practice it without all the distractions of a full swing.

Step 3

Just swing the "Y" a little farther back. Allow the handle of the club to lead the way to impact and finish with your weight on your front foot.

Step 4

Work your swing into an "L".  To do this form the letter "L" with your left arm and the club in the backswing (your hands should be waist-high, the shaft of the club will be pointed to the sky).  You'll need to engage your wrists for the first time now. Swing down and through to the same position on the other side of your body.

Step 5

Take the L swing and continue to turn your torso while keeping good Posture. On the downswing, integrate your body efficiently by trasferring you weight onto your front leg to help start the downswing.  Finish with a full, balanced follow-through.
